Why Is This Important?
Drug-overdose death data is important in understanding and responding to this crisis, but there’s a lag in the data’s availability because it’s based on death certificates, which take time to complete and analyze. Emergency Department visit data can be used to examine trends such as overdose spikes.
Story Behind the Curve
Overdose ED visits have generally been declining in recent years. Seasonal trends seem to indicate that the first quarter, January-March, of each year reflects a dip in overdose visits.
