What Works

Students are worked with in group settings, or individually. Students that show interest in obtaining employment are asked a series of questions, and both the outreach director and the student create a list of short term goals that will lead to an interview and obtaining a job.

Barriers

Barriers that the Achievers Director faces on a daily basis is the lack of parent involvement, and student homelessness. Without parent involvement and consent, there are many hoops to jump through in order to get the student what he/she needs.

Influences

During meetings with the Outreach Director and the student, we work on interests, and then job searches, how to build a resume, and how to apply for a job. When the interview is scheduled, we then work on how to interview, what to wear, and what not to wear. Asking and answering questions during the interview process.

Equity

The Y actively works to ensure that services are provided equitably. There are financial assistance programs, adaptive and inclusive programs, diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, community partnerships, and outreach programs to the underserved in the community.

Partners

CHC (Community Healthcare) Family Resources, Davenport Community Schools, North Scott Community Schools, Juvenile Detention Center, Juvenile courts, Davenport Police Department

Success Story

There is a 10th grade student that was homeless, living with a friend's family. The student was referred to the Outreach Director by another student at the school. After meeting with the student, it was determined that he needed help with job searching, and how to interview. He was unsure of what he wanted to do, but knew that he didn’t want to work in fast food. The student communicated that he liked working with people, and that he wanted to help in some sort of way. The student was able to apply, and interview for a lifeguard position at the YMCA, and secured the job. He has been working for about 3 months now, doing great and loves his job.
