Data Description & Source

Self-reported health is a widely used measure in public health. While there are some limitations to self-reported health data, research has shown correlations between self-reported health and physiological indicators of health, particularly for lifestyle related illnesses like diabetes, hypertension, and obesity.

Data Source: “Would you say that your health is: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor?” https://schs.dph.ncdhhs.gov/data/brfss/2022/nc/all/genhlth.html

Information from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) North Carolina surveys provide data associated with the following question. Responses are organized by gender, race/ethnicity, age, education, functional disability, veteran status, employment status, household income, poverty level, housing, rural-urban residency, and by NC Department of Commerce Tier system (for measuring economic well being/distress).
