Story Behind the Curve
Court Services, the Department of Public Safety/Juvenile Justice, Restorative Justice Program and other youth serving agencies are a part of the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council (JCPC) and they work closely with the Justice System Advisory Council (JSAC). As these groups address delinquency and prevention of adolescent offenses, parent(s)/custodian(s) are engaged to reduce juveniles' risk of reoffending and interrupt their trajectory in the juvenile justice system. Providing referrals to parenting education classes, parent(s)/custodian(s) are able to practice assertive discipline, encourage positive interactions and improve communication with their youth.

What Works
When justice involved youth are encountered and/or parents are found in justice-involved cases regarding care and safety of children, the courts or DSS case managers can make referrals to the Health Department requiring parents to participate in education. The Health Education Division can moderate Triple P OnLine with participants or host in-person parenting classes to provide parents with knoweldge and skills to practice effective parenting with their youth. Trained educators are accredited in evidence-based curriculum and will provide these classes to parents helping them set goals and practice skills learned to motivate appropriate behaivor in their children.
Action Plan
Action plan includes gaining support of JSAC, JCPC, and CCDSS to ensure referrals are made and parents have equitable access to parenting classes. Educators signing off on parent participation will also give them service hours towards any justice requirements and improve behavioral health.
