Definition

Pregnant women enrolled in WIC will begin receiving services in the first trimester of their pregnancy

Story Behind the Curve

By enrolling women who are in their first trimester of pregnancy, we can ensure that women have access to nutritious foods and nutrition education throughout their entire pregnancy, which helps ensure healthy development of the baby during pregnancy and improves birth outcomes.

Partners

Catawba County WIC has partnered with prenatal care providers, the Care Management for At-Risk Pregnancies program at Public Health, and community organizations to ensure that women who are pregnant are aware of WIC services.

What Works

Enrolling women early in their pregnancy requires women knowing about the availability of WIC services and eligibility requirements that allow them to participate. Many women don't know they are eligible, so outreach through trusted messengers helps us let all pregnant women know about WIC services.

Action Plan

We are actively conducting outreach to prenatal care providers and community partners to spread the word about WIC service availability.
