Story Behind the Curve

Over the past decade, Wilson County has experienced a steady increase in its suicide rate and the number of lives lost to suicide each year. White males account for the highest suicide deaths annually at 63%, indicating this group has been disproportionately impacted. White females accounted for 17% of deaths, while Black males accounted for 14%. Contributing factors like economic hardship, relationship problems, mental health issues, and substance abuse are woven throughout some of these tragic deaths. The COVID-19 pandemic has also elevated existing stressors and created new challenges for our community's mental wellbeing. Loss of income, social isolation, grief, illness, and uncertainty have negatively impacted the mental health of Wilson County residents, which may have led to further suicidal ideation. Our county's suicide rate is now higher than the rest of the state, indicating an escalating crisis.

What Works

Changing the course of this rising curve will require a commitment to removing barriers to mental healthcare, expanding community support systems, and investing in proven prevention strategies. A collective effort focused on education, peer support, crisis intervention, and mental wellness for all ages can help create a community where residents have hope for the future and pathways to get help when needed.

Strategy

  1. Expand Access - Increase mental health services in schools, primary care clinics, and through community providers. Make support easier to access when needed.
  2. Reduce Stigma - Launch anti-stigma campaigns showing mental illness impacts everyone. Promote acceptance and compassion.
  3. Invest in Promotion - Fund programs for early prevention and peer support. Teach coping skills and self-care. Make mental wellness a priority.
