Story Behind the Curve

Mecklenburg County has two Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) that served approximately 18,000 residents in 2021, of which nearly 9,000 were uninsured. Together, the county’s hospital systems, FQHCs, and other free and low-cost clinics are able to serve roughly 42,000 uninsured individuals with primary care. Therefore Mecklenburg County provided funding to increase the capacity of the current
primary care system (FQHCs and charitable clinics) serving under- and uninsured residents. The graph represents the first investment in 8 organizations.
