Story Behind the Curve
Racial and health equity are woven into all elements of the Public Health Department Strategic Plan. Expanding our capacity to apply a racial and health equity lens enables us to advance all objectives and strategies in the strategic plan. This measure reflects self-reported responses to the Employee Equity Survey. This survey was adapted from a longer survey developed by Race Forward, the parent organization to the Government Alliance on Race and Equity (GARE). Questions were selected with the intention of collecting data about staff capacity, individual and departmental readiness, and individual perceptions and willingness to advance racial equity in government. The survey will be administered to the Department every 2 years. The baseline value represents the number of staff who self-report knowledge/skills in racial and health equity. The Employee Equity Survey was last administered in summer 2022. Responses from the 2022 survey serve as our baseline percentage. The baseline percentage of staff with a general knowledge of racial and health equity is 71% for the Department of Environmental Health and 53% for the Public Health Department. The percentage of staff with an increased knowledge of racial and health equity for both departments combined is 56%. This survey will be administered again in 2024.
