Story Behind the Curve

The Utah Office of the Medical Examiner (OME) was established in 1972 under Title 26, Chapter 4 of the Utah Health Code: Utah Medical Examiner Act.

The National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME) accreditation standards seek to standardize and improve the quality of the medicolegal death investigations in the United States. The OME was accredited in 1981, but lost accreditation in the late 1990s. We were reaccredited by NAME in April 2024.

NAME accreditation requires us to meet 106 out of 121 phase I standards (87% compliance). NAME conducted an on-site inspection in March 2024. The inspection found 8 phase I deficiencies (93% compliance) which met the phase I accreditation requirements.

Target (PI): (121 PI standards - 15 allowable deficiencies) / 121 = 87.60%

Actual (PI): (121 PI standards - # of found deficiencies) / 121 = ___ %
