About the Data
Severe maternal morbidity (SMM), which the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines as “unexpected outcomes of labor and delivery that can result in significant short- or long-term health consequences.
Replication of the national Alliance on Innovation in Maternal Health (AIM) methodology, calculating SMM for Bexar County. The calculation uses the state hospital discharge dataset, which unfortunately does mean that deliveries at military hospitals are not included. SMM rather than maternal mortality was chosen as the focus because the SMM counts are much larger than maternal death counts, allowing us to look at differences by maternal age and race/ethnicity without risking patient privacy or generating rates that are too unreliable to use
