Why Is This Important?
Oral health is an important indicator of overall health for individuals and the population. Dental caries (cavities), both untreated and treated, and tooth loss are key indicators of oral health and are used to monitor oral health status in the United States. Although prevalence of dental caries has been declining in the United States, the magnitude of the decline has varied across different population groups during the past two decades. The graph below gives a general view of dental decay and restoration history by age group, showing 90% of American will experience dental disease in their lifetime!
