This scorecard represents the ongoing work of the Success By 6 (SB6) Early Childhood Coalition to improve outcomes for children ages 0-6 in Nueces County. Applying the Results Based Accountability framework, the SB6 Coalition partners developed a plan for strategic impact for the broad population of children 0-6 and align their program contributions and performance measures relative to end Results. Each Result is quantified by a set of Indicators, a population level metric for determining progress.
The information on this Scorecard is a work in progress and should therefore be viewed in the spirit of a community striving together towards continuous improvement on behalf of children and families.
Why Is This Important?
Research shows that prevention is important because (1) maltreatment can be avoided and (2) abuse and neglect can lead to negative consequences such as depression, developmental delays (e.g., speech difficulties), and the greater risk of developing substance abuse during adulthood (APA, 2017; Teicher & Samson, 2016).
Return on Investment
Immediate and long-term economic impact of child abuse and neglect suggests that child maltreatment costs the nation as much as $258 million each day, or approximately $94 billion each year.

Why Is This Important?
Conditions in the places where people live, learn, work, and play affect a wide range of health risks and outcomes. Environmental and social factors such as access to health care and early intervention services, educational, employment, and economic opportunities, social support, and availability of resources to meet daily needs influence maternal health behaviors and health status.

Why Is This Important?
The brain undergoes the majority of its development when a child is between the ages of prenatal and 5. Participating in high-quality early learning programs can significantly improve a young student’s long-term academic achievement. Attending a Pre-K program significantly increases school readiness and 3rd grade literacy outcomes. The impact is greatest when the program is high-quality and full-day.
Return on Investment
- The National Forum on Early Childhood Policy and Programs has found that high quality early childhood programs can yield a $4-$9 dollar return per $1 invested.
- A 2009 study of Perry Preschool, a high-quality program for 3-5 year olds developed in Michigan in the 1960s, estimated a return to society of between about $7 and $12 for each $1 invested.
