Jersey's future relies on people wanting to live in, or return to, the Island. An important factor influencing that choice is Jersey's attraction as a place where people and community matter, making it a great place to live, socialise, grow up and belong.
Medium-term focus: the Government Plan 2020-23
A Government Plan 2020-23 commitment is to invest in sports facilities and to ensure that 1% of the Government budget will be dedicated to Jersey’s arts and culture. The plan acknowledges that not everyone can take part fully in Jersey life and prioritises improving social inclusion and progress towards a society where everyone has opportunities to participate.
Where we live and how we live has a huge effect on our wellbeing. Being a small Island means that Jersey has the opportunity to remain a place where community really means something and people enjoy equality of opportunity.
For a small island, Jersey punches above its weight in the range, and quality, of its culture and heritage. Improving this offer and increasing participation not only supports individual quality of life and community wellbeing, but it also enhances Jersey's appeal as a vibrant place to work, live and visit. Culture and heritage also contribute significantly to health and wellbeing, social connections and life-satisfaction and play an essential role in shaping vibrant, attractive places that enhance the quality of life.
Sport has the potential to enhance anyone's life, both physically and emotionally, and help foster a healthier, fairer society. An active population is more likely to be a healthy population, with a better quality of life and lower health care costs. Research has also shown the positive effects of sport on education, including improved attainment, lower absenteeism and drop-out rates, and increased progression to higher education. Engagement in sporting activities also builds social cohesion and connections, reducing isolation and improving life satisfaction. A lifestyle supported by a thriving sports sector helps establish Jersey as a desirable place to live and work.
