Long-term perspective
Short journeys for work, shopping or social activities represent one of the benefits of Island life. In many places, long and unpredictable commuter times are linked to negative lifestyle and health outcomes and economic costs. Nevertheless, Jersey has a high level of car ownership and usage. Growing use of the car results in less physical activity and, consequently, a less fit and healthy society. It also has a negative impact on Jersey's air quality, energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.
Why Is This Important?
Shifting away from car use to more sustainable modes of travel is key to reducing congestion, pollution, road injuries and health problems caused by low levels of physical activity
Why Is This Important?
Most people use Jersey's roads every day, as drivers, passengers, cyclists and pedestrians. They should be able to do so safely. Collisions in which people are killed or injured can have a devastating impact on individuals and families, as well as high social and economic costs, including damage to property, loss of productivity and insurance costs. They can also place significant demands on health care and emergency services. Perceptions of road safety also influence people's transport choices.
Why Is This Important?
It is easy to take for granted the ability to travel around the island, but this is not the reality for everyone. For our ageing population, and many people living with some sort of disability, access to transport can be far from straightforward. In 2015, 41% of disabled Islanders reported experiencing difficulty travelling around Jersey.
