What We Do

Chesapeake Helps serves as the Information and Referral Portion (I&R) portion of the Single point of access for Mid-Shore Region including an information/referral line and website for children and family services with screening for the level of need. For FY2016, Chesapeake Helps serves as the Information and Referral (I&R) portion of the Single Point of Access for Queen Anne's County - the other four counties chose not to participate in a multi-county contract.

Story Behind the Curve

Since the funding was drastically cut, the staff was reduced to a contractual position. In addition, the phone calls aren't coming as steady as they used to, which could possibly be because more people are using other means (cell phone internet searches, computer web searches, etc.). And finally, when setting up the matrix for FY2016, all targets took into account that we would only be tracking Queen Anne's County data, except for one, which was a mistake on the part of Jennifer Stansbury. This target was for number of referrals made which shows a target of 1300, but which should have been considerably lower.

Why Is This Important?

A strong system of care for children ages prenatal through the start of their school experience not only shows an increased preparation and success in school but it also yields other positive results such as: stronger cognitive skills, lower school dropout rates, social and emotional strength, and lower rates of teen pregnancy and incarceration.

Story Behind the Curve

FY2016 Actuals for 7/01/2015 to 12/31/2015:

  • We are on track to have 102 coaches placed by the end of February. There was a delay in the start of the program at the Centreville Middle School. The peer coaches will be trained on February 18, 2016.
  • During the past six months there have been a total of 13 press releases; one cable coverage and eight community events participated in.
  • The number of retentions appears to be consistent yearly taking into account the turnover of the eighth grade peer coaches each year.
  • The effectiveness of the eighth grade coaches cannot be measured yet as the program is just being started in February at Centreville Middle School. Even though meeting with the school guidance counselor at Sudlersville Middle School over the summer, there has been some resistance from the adminstration for implementing the program there due to concerns about reducing the eighth grade coaches and fifth grade students' instruction time in the classroom. This will hopefully change in the future. During a meeting with the Matapeake Middle School principal and guidance counselor about the peer coaching the response was positive, but we have not been able to implement the program yet.
