In California, a kindergarten dental checkup requirement, Assembly Bill 1433, was signed into law in 2005. Students entering public school for the first time in kindergarten or first grade will have to present proof of having received an oral health assessment by California licensed dental health professional. The assessment minimally collects data on untreated and treated caries (caries experience). To meet the oral health assessment requirement, schools distribute the state approved oral health assessment forms to parents. Schools are responsible for informing their students of the oral health assessment requirement, assisting them in receiving the screening, and reporting the data to the System for California Oral Health Reporting (SCOHR).
