HNC 2030 Scorecard: Anson County (2024-2028)

 


                                              

Anson County, North Carolina, located in the central Piedmont region of the State, is a predominantly rural area known for its agricultural heritage and proximity to Charlotte.  It's characterized by rolling hills, the Pee Dee River valley, and features the Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge. The county was established in 1750 and named after George Anson, a British admiral. 

Anson County is situated on the eastern edge of the Piedmont region, along the South Carolina border. It's about 40 miles from Uptown Charlotte and 140 miles from the Port of Wilmington. The landscape transitions from agricultural land to the rugged hills of the Pee Dee River valley.

Agriculture remains a primary economic driver for the county. The county is also known for its hunting opportunities and the burgeoning Anson County Winery

Anson County offers a variety of outdoor activities, including access to the Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge for kayaking and canoeing. It's described as a destination for nature lovers and those seeking a "day trip" experience. 

Anson County was initially much larger, serving as the "mother county" from which other North Carolina counties were formed. It played a significant role in cotton production for the region's textile mills during the 19th and 20th centuries. The county seat, Wadesboro, was established in 1783. 

As a Public Health Department, we are responsible for ensuring equitable access to local health information and the analysis of local health data to address the findings priorities. The 2024 Community Health Assessment was drafted in partnership with residents, community organizations, Atrium Health Anson and public organizations.  This assessment provides valuable information of the health and welfare of Anson County residents and states the key areas of concern for the community health improvement planning. The ultimate goal is to achieve these priorities and to ensure the wellbeing for Anson County's residents.
