Wayne County is located in the eastern part of North Carolina and is known for its rich agricultural heritage, strong military presence, and vibrant community life. Established in 1779 the county is home to approximately 115,000 residents. The county seat and largest city is Goldsboro, which also hosts Seymour Johnson Air Force Base - a key economic and cultural hub for the region.
Every three to four years, local health departments are required by North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and North Carolina Local Health Department Accreditation Board to conduct a community health assessment. Non-for-profit hospitals are also required to conduct a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) as legislated by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010. Wayne County Health and Human Services and UNC Health Wayne partnered to complete one assessment meeting the requirements of NC DHHS, the Local Health Department Accreditation Board and Internal Revenue Services. The purpose of this joint assessment is to examine the health of Wayne County and determine the health priorities that will be the focus of improving community health over the next three years (2024-2027).
