About the NC State Health Improvement Plan (NC SHIP)
The North Carolina State Health Improvement Plan (NC SHIP) is the state’s long-term roadmap for advancing health, opportunity, and equity across all communities. Guided by the Healthy North Carolina 2030 (HNC 2030) framework, NC SHIP identifies 21 priority health indicators that reflect the social, economic, and environmental conditions that shape health outcomes. These indicators anchor statewide goals and provide a common set of measures for collective action.
The NC SHIP Community Council serves as the statewide network that brings together residents, community organizations, government agencies, health systems, philanthropy, and other partners. Through cross-sector work groups, members collaborate to strengthen access to health, education, and economic opportunity, recognizing that these drivers are deeply interconnected.
NC SHIP uses a Results-Based Accountability (RBA) approach to track progress and support data-informed decision-making. The Healthy North Carolina 2030 Scorecard monitors each statewide indicator, while local health departments and community partners link their local scorecards to the state’s dashboard. This alignment highlights how community-rooted efforts contribute to broader statewide improvement.
Now at the halfway point to 2030, NC SHIP demonstrates how coordinated action, shared accountability, and transparent data can accelerate progress toward a healthier North Carolina for all.
