Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)

Description

The Hoke County Health Department ensures that select employees receive training in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), a comprehensive two-day in-person workshop designed to teach participants how to assist individuals at risk for suicide. During the workshop, participants learn to recognize the warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide, how to intervene effectively, and how to develop a safety plan that connects the individual to further support.

ASIST aims to increase participants' willingness, confidence, and ability to provide "suicide first aid" in critical situations. The training is led by two experienced and supportive trainers who foster a comfortable and safe learning environment. This program equips Hoke County employees with the essential skills to respond to individuals in crisis, providing them with the tools to make a meaningful difference in preventing suicide and connecting people to the help they need.

Progress in 2022-2023

The Hoke County Health Department (HCHD) continues to advance suicide prevention and community engagement efforts, focusing on diverse populations and implementing evidence-based strategies. This year, significant progress was made in addressing mental health challenges and promoting safety across the county.

Community Listening Sessions
HCHD held three community listening sessions aimed at understanding the needs of underserved populations, including Native American, LatinX, and LGBTQI+ communities. These sessions provided valuable insights into the unique challenges faced by these groups, helping to shape future health initiatives and ensure culturally responsive approaches.

First Annual Suicide Symposium
In a major milestone, HCHD hosted its first annual Suicide Symposium, which attracted over 100 attendees and featured five vendors providing resources and support. The symposium created a platform for open dialogue, education, and collaboration around suicide prevention efforts in the county.

Event Participation and Outreach

  • Tabling Events: HCHD supported 988, the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, by participating in 24 community events to raise awareness and promote mental health resources.
  • Training Expansion: The number of individuals trained in suicide prevention increased dramatically from 12 in 2022 to 67 in 2023.
  • Gun Lock Distribution: HCHD distributed 202 gun locks in 2023, up from 168 in 2022, promoting safe firearm storage as a critical suicide prevention measure. Additionally, 12 individuals reported purchasing gun safes, further enhancing home safety.

ASIST Training for Employees
HCHD ensures select employees are trained in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), an intensive two-day workshop designed to equip participants with the skills to provide "suicide first aid." Key aspects of the ASIST program include:

  • Recognizing warning signs of suicide.
  • Intervening effectively to connect individuals at risk with appropriate resources.
  • Developing safety plans tailored to individuals’ needs.

ASIST training, led by experienced trainers in a supportive environment, boosts confidence and the ability to assist those in crisis. By investing in this training, HCHD empowers its workforce to make meaningful interventions, ensuring at-risk individuals receive the support they need.

Impact and Significance

  • The increased number of trained individuals and distributed gun locks reflects the department’s commitment to promoting safety and preventing suicide.
  • Community listening sessions have strengthened relationships with marginalized groups, ensuring their voices guide public health strategies.
  • The Suicide Symposium and ASIST training have provided invaluable resources and skills, fostering a community-wide commitment to mental health.
