The RIMC program requires two partnerships within the community: a funded and unfunded partnership. The funded partner is United Way, and the unfunded partner is Partnership for Children of Wayne County.
Description
The Reducing Infant Mortality in Communities (RIMC) Program is a care coordination service that provides a support system for minority prenatal and postpartum women living in Wayne County. RIMC focuses on addressing the overall infant mortality rate and infant mortality disparity ratio. RIMC provides education in the following areas: Infant Safe Sleep and Breastfeeding Support. Participation in the program provides education and incentives including breast pumps and pack n plays. The RIMC Program is one of the newest programs for the Health Education Department and will begin June 1, 2023.
With the Breastfeeding Support Services, the program serves 25 unduplicated women. Providing the UNC Gillings Ready, Set, Baby class and breastfeeding support from pregnancy until six months postpartum. With Infant Safe Sleep strategy, 200 pregnant women will attend a class designed by NC Safe Sleep, with 50% being minority women.
Reducing Infant Mortality in Communities (RIMC) program is an infant mortality reduction program that awards funds to local health departments/districts (LHDs) to implement evidence-based strategies that are proven to lower infant mortality rates. In conjunction with community engagement effort health department staff were able to identify two evidence-based strategies to implement: Breastfeeding Support Services and Infant Safe.
Progress in 2023
In FY 2023-2024, based on the 3-month survey of safe sleep given to class participants postpartum, 27 participants were still practicing safe sleep.
