Post Overdose Response Team (PORT)

What We Do

The county's Post Overdose Response Team (PORT) addresses the aftermath of overdoses and provides support to individuals and families affected. When an overdose occurs, our PORT professionals respond to the scene, offering life-saving interventions and immediate assistance to those in crisis. Our team connects individuals who have experienced an overdose and their loved ones to resources and services, including addiction treatment, mental health support, counseling, and social services. We facilitate a comprehensive approach that focuses on recovery, harm reduction, and reducing the risk of future overdoses. By addressing the needs of those impacted by overdoses, PORT actively contributes to saving lives and preventing further harm.

Who We Serve

PORT serves a broad spectrum of individuals within our county who have been directly or indirectly affected by overdoses. Our primary focus is on individuals who have experienced overdoses and their families and close associates. We are committed to reaching out to the most vulnerable and at risk, including individuals with substance use disorders, those struggling with mental health issues, and those who may be marginalized or underserved within our community. Additionally, we engage with the community to provide education about what an overdose is, the signs and symptoms, and how to respond until medical assistance arrives.

How We Impact

The impact of our county's Post Overdose Response Team is profound and far-reaching. By providing immediate assistance and connecting individuals affected by overdoses to vital services, this team enhances the chances of recovery and reduces the risk of further overdoses. Their swift response not only saves lives but also addresses the root causes of addiction and mental health challenges, ultimately improving the overall well-being of our community. Moreover, PORT is pivotal in reducing the burden on emergency healthcare systems and law enforcement agencies, freeing up resources for other critical needs.

Wilson County EMS is planning to roll out a program to leave behind kits that contain naloxone and materials to help dispose of opioids after overdose calls. The agency reported an increase in naloxone administration by its providers over the past few months.
